Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) - Assam

About the Mission
The Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban (SBM-U), Assam is a flagship initiative under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, launched on October 2, 2014. It aims to revolutionize urban sanitation, solid waste management, and hygiene practices across Assam’s cities and towns.
In its first phase, Assam’s municipal areas proudly achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) certification in 2019. Building on this success, the mission has now entered its second phase — SBM-U 2.0 — with the ambitious vision of achieving Garbage Free Cities by 2026.
SBM-U Assam works closely with Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), district authorities, PHED, AUWSSB, the Pollution Control Board, and several national missions and private partners. Through strong on-ground teams, particularly City Project Officers (CPOs), the mission ensures regular implementation, monitoring, and reporting via the national Swachhatam Portal.
